Job offers that ask you to pay first deserve a closer look

An unexpected job offer can be exciting, especially when the promised pay is high and the hiring process seems easy. Requests for money, account access or purchases before verified employment should prompt a careful pause.

Confirm the employer independently

Find the company through its official site and contact channel. Check whether the role and recruiter can be verified. A logo, interview by text or email address resembling the company’s name does not settle the question.

Examine the transaction

Be cautious about instructions to deposit a check and send part of the money elsewhere, buy equipment from a specified stranger or pay to unlock tasks. Money appearing in an account is not always proof that a payment is final.

Protect your information

Provide sensitive onboarding details only after establishing the legitimate process and recipient. Preserve suspicious messages and use official reporting resources if needed. A real opportunity should withstand reasonable verification. Pressure to decide immediately should not become the reason you skip the checks that distinguish a job from a story designed to obtain money or identity information.
