A hotel-room safety check before unpacking everything
A short check on arrival can help you understand the room and the building before you settle in. The aim is to notice practical issues and use the property’s support, not to treat every unfamiliar place as a threat.

Find the exit information
Read the posted emergency guidance and locate the relevant exits. Check that the room’s door closes and locks as intended. Report defects to the property rather than attempting repairs that could create another problem.
Keep essential access simple
Put the room key and necessary items somewhere you can find them. Do not block the exit with luggage. Follow the property’s instructions for valuables and ask about anything unclear.
Verify unexpected requests
If someone claims to be staff and asks for access or payment details, contact reception through an independently verified method. A uniform or a familiar name is not the only check available. If a situation feels immediately dangerous, move to a safer place and seek appropriate help. A few ordinary checks can make the stay more comfortable because you know how the space works.
